YORUBA


The Yoruba are one of the largest African ethic group south of the Sahara Desert. They are, not a single group, but rather a coolection of diverse people bound together by a common lauguage, history, and culture. Within Nigeria, the Yoruba dominate the western part of the country.
 Yoruba mythology holds that all yoruba people descended from a hero called Oduduwa. Today there are over ffty individual who claim kingship as descendants of Oduduwa.











Durng the fourth centuries of the slave trade, Yoruba territory was known as the Slave Coast. Uncounted numbers of Yoruba were carried to the Americas. Their descendants presrved Yoruba traditions. In several part of the Caribbean and South America, Yoruba religion has been combined with Christianity. In 1893 the Yoruba kingdoms in Nigeria bcame part of the Protectorate of Great Britain. Until 1960 Nigeria was a British colony and the Yoruba were British Subjects. On Octomber 1, 1960, Nigeria became Independent nation structured as a federation of states.
 
 LANGUAGE
 The Yoruba language belongs to the Congo Kordofanian language fanily. Yoruba has many dialets, but its speakers can all understand each other.
Yoruba ia tonal lauguage. The same combination of Vowels and Consonants has different meaning depending on the pitch of the vowels(whether they are pronounced with high voice or low voice).
  LOCATION
 The Yoruba homeland is located in wast Africa. It strtches from a savanna(grassland)region in the north to a region of tropical rain forests in the South. Most Yoruba live in Nigeria.
 There are also some small countries in west Africa that Yoruba lives, countries like Benin Republic, Togo, and others.
Currently census figure are differnt to obtain The Yourba population is estimated to be 5.3million.
  MAJOR HOLIDAY
  Local festivals are usually dedicated to individual deities. Yoruba alway celebrate religion holiday whether they are Muslim or Christian and National holiday; The holiday like New year holiday, that is the first day of the year January first(1st). Independence day (1st of Octomber) Worker's day(1st of may), Christmas(25th of December), Children day (27th of May), Democracy day(29 of May), Els al Adha(Feast of Sacrifice), Eld al Fltr.
   LIVING ENVIRONMENT
  In Yoruba land, They have traditional compound, (which house cleans) in Yoruba rural area are made up of rectangular courtyard, each have a single means of entrance. Around each courtyard is an open or a partly enclosed porch, These are the women sit, cook and weave. Today Yoruba houses and environment is better in good condition,Most of the houses in Yorubas now have good houses of modern days like stories building houses build with a glass, and bungalowthat was build with celement blcoks with corrugated iron roofs. and other good facilities in the their environment like Good Road, Electricity, Good water supply. Yoruba also have Natural gift like sunshine, raining at the raining reason, and good weather.
FOOD
 Yoruba diet consist of grains, tibers, and plantain. They have tastety food In Yorubaland food like yam, beans, maize, rice, potato, plantain, garri(cassava flour), eba, amala(yam flour) fufu. fish, meat, e.t.c. likewise, different types of vegetable, They like Iyan(poundrd yam) most and they eat it on special occasions.
EDUCATION
 Since Indpendence in 1960 Nigeria has a high priority on education, Universal primary education has become norm in Yorubaland western part of Nigeria. The first University that was located in Yorubaland is called Univerity College, it was now called Univerity of Ibadan(UI) and most of the student in this University was Yorubas. Yoruba parent love education and they allow there children to go to school, They have become great person through education like Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher e.t.c.
