The Yoruba are one of the largest African ethic group south of the Sahara Desert. They are, not a single group, but rather a coolection of diverse people bound together by a common lauguage, history, and culture. Within Nigeria, the Yoruba dominate the western part of the country.

In several part of the Caribbean and South America, Yoruba religion has been combined with Christianity. In 1893 the Yoruba kingdoms in Nigeria bcame part of the Protectorate of Great Britain. Until 1960 Nigeria was a British colony and the Yoruba were British Subjects. On Octomber 1, 1960, Nigeria became Independent nation structured as a federation of states.
 
 LANGUAGE
 The Yoruba language belongs to the Congo Kordofanian language fanily. Yoruba has many dialets, but its speakers can all understand each other.
Yoruba ia tonal lauguage. The same combination of Vowels and Consonants has different meaning depending on the pitch of the vowels(whether they are pronounced with high voice or low voice).
  LOCATION
 The Yoruba homeland is located in wast Africa. It strtches from a savanna(grassland)region in the north to a region of tropical rain forests in the South. Most Yoruba live in Nigeria.
 There are also some small countries in west Africa that Yoruba lives, countries like Benin Republic, Togo, and others.

FOOD
 Yoruba diet consist of grains, tibers, and plantain. They have tastety food In Yorubaland food like yam, beans, maize, rice, potato, plantain, garri(cassava flour), eba, amala(yam flour) fufu. fish, meat, e.t.c. likewise, different types of vegetable, They like Iyan(poundrd yam) most and they eat it on special occasions.
EDUCATION
 Since Indpendence in 1960 Nigeria has a high priority on education, Universal primary education has become norm in Yorubaland western part of Nigeria. The first University that was located in Yorubaland is called Univerity College, it was now called Univerity of Ibadan(UI) and most of the student in this University was Yorubas. Yoruba parent love education and they allow there children to go to school, They have become great person through education like Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher e.t.c.

 Hadiza Ladi Kwali was born in the village of kwali in 1925, the Gwari region of Northern Nigeria, where pottery was an indigenous female tradition.
 Ladi Kwali is one of the Nigeria's most famous artists and potters, She lived an accomplished life, and her legacy still lives on today.








Her first name, "Ladi" means born on sunday.
Several were acquired by the Emir of Abuja, Alhaji Suleiman Barau, in whose home they were seen by Micheal Cardew 1950.
 She learned to make pottery as a child by her aunt using the traditional method of coiling.
 She was arwarded an MBE(Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 1962.
 She is the only Nigerian woman to be featured on a currency note- 20 naira.
 Her pots were noted for their beauty of form and decoration, and she was recognized regionally as a gifted and eminent potter.
 In 1980, the Nigerian Government(from the Cabinet Office of the Federal Republic of Nigeria) invested to her with the insignia of th Nigerian National Order of Merit Award (NNOM), the highest national honour for academic achievement. She died on August 12, 1984.











Her pottery was displayed during the Independence celebration in 1960.
 She was a member of the Most Excellent order of the British Empire(MBE).
Ladi was the recipient of a silver award for excellence from the Smithsinian Institute, Washington D.C
 Even though she could not read nor write, Ladi was awarded a Doctorate degree by Ahmadu Bello University in 1977.
 A road in Abuja has been named after her, named nLadi Kwali road.

 He had to protest against the anti-people policy introduced by the government of the day. When he felt his position in the University would prevent him from achieving this aim, he resigned.
   He served Jail terms
  Wole Soyinka's love and partriotism for Nigeria earned him imprisonment, not once. In 1965, he was arrested due to his firm stand to prosecute the issue of election malpractice. Wole Soyinka forced a radio announcer to broadcast that the election was false, claming that it was rigged. After three months, the campaign from the international Community of Writers prompted his release.













  In 1967, during the Civil War, He was accused of supporting the Biafrians. For this too, he was imprisoned for 22 months.
  He wrote in Prison
 While in Prison, Soyinka's Muse never forsook him. Through denied access to materials, he manageed to smuggle in pieces of tissues and liters to write on. Even while in the prison, he continued to writes notes and never stopped speaking tough against the government for its injustice and violation of fundamental human rights.

   In the bid to mediate between the two elephants in the Nigerian Civil War of 1967-1970, Soyinka secretly organized a meetng attended by himself, the then military Governor Chkuwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and others. He went into hiding after this event was laterexposed. Also in 1994, during the rule of General, Sani Abacha, he feared being arrested for advocating democaracy in Nigeria. So, he field the country for Paris. Later, He was to be seen living in the United states, However when Sani Abacha died in 1998, the indefatigable Soyinka returned home.

 Early Years, Musician and political activist Fela Kuti was born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti on Octomber 15, 1938, in Abeokuta Ogun State, Nigeria. Kuti was the son of a Protestant minister, Reverend Ransome-Kuti. His mother, Funmilayo, wads a political activist.
  His father, Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, an Anglian minister, and school principal, His father was the first president of the Nigeria Union of Teachers.
  Fela is the first cousin to the Nigerian and Noble laureate Wole Soyinka, the first Africa to win the Noble Price for Literature.
  He attended the Abeokuta Grammar School in Abeokuta and later he was sent to London in 1958 medicine but decided to study music instead at the Trinity College of Music.















 The trumpet was his prefrred instrument.
He first called his music Afrobeat in 1969.
He said that his original middle name of Ransome was a slave name.
 In 1967, he went to Ghana to think up a new musical direction.
 Fela married to his frst wife, Remilekun Taylor, with whom he had three children(Femi, Yeni, and Sola).
 In 1963, Fela moved back to Nigeria and trained as a radio producer for the Nigerian Broadcasting Corportion.
 Fela formed the Kalakuta Republic, a commune, a recording studio, and a home for many people connected to the band that he later declared independent from the Nigerian states.
 He changed his middle name to Anikulapo(meaning "He who carries death in his pouch", with the interpretation ; "I will be the master of my own desting and i will decide when it is time for death to take me").
  He made the decision to sing Pidgin English so that his music could be enjoyed by individuals all over Africa, where the local language were spoken are very diverse and numerous.











He set up a nightclub in the Empire Hotel, first named the Afro-spot and then the Afika Shrine, where he both performed regularly and officiated at personalized Yoruba traditional ceremonies in honour of his nation's ancestral faith.
 In 1977, Fela and the Afrika 70 released the album Zombie, a scathing attack on Nigerian Soldiers using the zombie mataphor to describe the method of the Nigerian military. The album was a smash hit and infuriated the government, setting off a vicious attack against the Kalakuta Republic, during which one thousand soldiers attacked the commune. Fela was severaly beaten, and his elderly mother(whose house was located opposite the commune) was thrown from window, causing fatal injuries.
  Fela response to the attack was ato deliver his mother's coffin to the Dodan Barracks in Lagos, General Olusegun Obasanjo's residence, and to write two songs "coffin for Head of State" and "Unkown Soldier".
  Fela and his band took residence in Crossroads Hotel as the Shrine had been destoryed along with his commune.
 In 1978, Fela married 27 women, many of whom were his dancers, Composer, and singers to mark the anniversary of the attack on the Kalakuta Repulic.














 He did not perform songs again after he had already recorded them.
 In 1979, he put himself forward for President in Nigeria's first eletions for more than a decade, But his candidature was refused.
 In 1984, Muhammadu Buhari's government, of which Fela was a vocal oppoenet, jailed him on a charge of currency smuggling which Amnesty International amd others denounced as political motivated.
 He was released from prison by General Ibrahim Babangida after 20 months.
 Amensty International designated him a prionser of conscience and his case was also taken up to by other human rights groups.
 On his release he divored his 12 remaining wives, saying that "marriage brings jealousy and selfishness".
 In 1989, Fela and Egypt'80 released the anti-apaertheid Breast of No nation that depict on its cover U.S. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and South African State President Pieter Willem Botha.
He was arrested 200 times and endured numerous beatings, but continued to write political lyrics, producing albums before he died on August 2, 1997.
